How long after fertilizing the lawn should dogs stay off?
Based on EPA labels and sources cited below, last checked November 4, 2026. Always follow the label on your product.
Short answer: it depends on what is in the bag. For combination products, the EPA label sets the minimum. For granules, NPIC says pets may need to stay off 24 hours or longer while granules dissolve and the area dries. When the label gives a longer time than our advice, the label wins.
Quick guide by product type
| What you applied | Minimum wait | Where that comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Plain granular fertilizer (no EPA Reg. No.) | Follow the bag. NPIC: granular lawn products may require 24 hours or longer | Bag directions; NPIC general guidance |
| Liquid fertilizer only | Follow the bottle. NPIC: until completely dry and well ventilated | Bottle directions; NPIC general guidance |
| Granular weed and feed (Scotts, 538-333) | Label: until dusts have settled (and no watering or mowing for 24 hours). NPIC: granular products may require 24 hours or longer | EPA label plus NPIC |
| Liquid weed and feed (Scotts, 538-328) | Until sprays have dried | EPA label |
| Grub control granules (GrubEx, 538-306) | Water in about 1 inch, then until grass has dried | EPA label |
Why granules can take longer
NPIC says granular lawn products may require keeping pets off 24 hours or longer while the granules dissolve and the treated area dries. For weed and feed, the label says to apply to wet grass and not water or mow for at least 24 hours.
Step by step
- Read the bag. If it shows an EPA Reg. No., find the re-entry line on the label.
- Put pets inside before you start spreading.
- Sweep granules from sidewalks and driveways back onto the grass.
- Water in only if the label says to (not weed and feed).
- Wait at least as long as the label says. For granular products, NPIC says 24 hours or longer may be needed.
Dogs, cats, and kids
The labels on this page use one re-entry rule for people and all pets.
Why we never say shorter
Every wait time on this site is either the label's own rule or NPIC's published general guidance, quoted and linked, and never shorter than the label. If your label gives a longer wait than this page, follow your label.
Questions people ask
How long after fertilizing can my dog go on the lawn?
For plain fertilizer, follow the bag. If it is a combination product with a weed or insect killer, follow the EPA label's re-entry rule, which for the products we checked ranges from "until dusts have settled" to "once grass has dried" after watering in. NPIC says granular products may need pets off for 24 hours or longer.
Should I water fertilizer in before letting my dog out?
Only if the bag or label says to. GrubEx's label, for example, says to water in. Weed and feed is the opposite: its label says do not water or mow for at least 24 hours. NPIC says granular lawn products may require keeping pets off 24 hours or longer while granules dissolve and the area dries.
What if it rains right after?
The Scotts and GrubEx labels say applying when rain is not predicted for the next 24 hours helps keep the product from washing off the treatment area. Follow the rain directions on your own label.
