Pet safe lawn treatment: a plain-English plan for dog owners

Based on EPA labels and sources cited below, last checked November 4, 2026. Always follow the label on your product.

Short answer: treat only what you need to, read the re-entry line on the label before you buy, keep pets in during application and until the label's condition is met, and store everything out of reach.

1. Decide whether you need a pesticide

2. Read the label before you buy

Look for three things on the bag or bottle:

  1. EPA Reg. No. This identifies the exact product and lets you look up the label on EPA's site.
  2. Signal word. Caution, Warning, or Danger, in rising order of acute toxicity. Some low-toxicity products have none.
  3. The re-entry line. Usually in the precautions or directions: "until dry", "until dusts have settled", or similar.

3. Label re-entry rules we have checked

ProductTypeLabel re-entry rule (exact words)
Scotts Turf Builder Weed & FeedGranules"until dusts have settled" (and no watering for 24 hours)
Scotts Liquid Turf Builder Weed & FeedLiquid"until sprays have dried"
Scotts GrubExGranules"once grass has dried" (after watering in)
Preen Garden Weed PreventerGranules (beds, not lawns)"until dusts have settled", or if watered in, until watering is complete and the surface is dry
Roundup (both formulas)Liquid"until spray has dried"
Ortho Home DefenseLiquid"after spray has dried"
Talstar PLiquid concentrate"until the spray has dried"
Amdro Fire Ant BaitBait granules"out of the area during application" (no after-time given)

4. On treatment day

5. If you hire a lawn company

Ask for each product name and Reg. No., then look up the labels here or on EPA's site. NPIC suggests talking to your lawn service about the products they use and the potential risk to your pets.

Dogs vs cats, kids

The label rule applies to people and all pets. See our cats guide.

Questions people ask

Can I ask my lawn company to be pet friendly?

Yes. Ask for the product names and EPA Reg. Nos. they apply, and the label re-entry rule for each. NPIC suggests talking to your lawn service about the products they use and the potential risk to your pets.

Is a pet safe yard spray the same as a pet safe lawn treatment?

Usually people mean an insect spray for the yard. Check whether it has an EPA Reg. No. EPA exempts certain minimum risk pesticides from registration, so those will not have one. Either way, follow the label's directions about pets.
