Is bifenthrin safe for dogs? What labels and NPIC say
Based on EPA labels and sources cited below, last checked November 4, 2026. Always follow the label on your product.
Short answer: bifenthrin products we checked tell you to keep pets off treated surfaces until the spray has dried. Concentration varies more than 150 fold between products, so the label on your container is what counts.
Bifenthrin products compared
| Product | EPA Reg. No. | Bifenthrin | Pet rule on label |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ortho Home Defense (ready to use) | 239-2753 | 0.05% | "People and Pets may re-enter treated area after spray has dried." |
| Talstar P (concentrate, diluted before use) | 279-3206 | 7.9% | "Do not allow people or pets on treated surfaces until the spray has dried." |
Labels: 239-2753, 279-3206. Concentrates are diluted before spraying, so in-tank strength is lower than 7.9%.
What bifenthrin is
Bifenthrin is a pyrethroid insecticide. NPIC says it is not likely to reach groundwater because it binds tightly to soil, but soil-bound bifenthrin can reach surface water through runoff. Both labels on this page warn that the product is extremely toxic to fish.
Signs of exposure in pets
NPIC lists: single-episode vomiting or diarrhea, reduced activity, ear twitching, paw flicking, and increased drooling. Other signs can include hyperactivity followed by incoordination with diarrhea, depression, and dilated pupils.
Dogs vs cats
Cats are well documented as sensitive to permethrin (NPIC), because their bodies break it down slowly. NPIC's bifenthrin sheet does not make that claim for bifenthrin, so we do not either. The labels use one rule for all pets.
Kids
NPIC says there are no data showing children are more sensitive to bifenthrin specifically, while noting children may be more sensitive to pesticides in general.
Granules vs liquids
The two liquid labels here use the "until dry" rule. Granular products have their own labels. NPIC notes granular lawn products may need pets off for 24 hours or longer. Check the bag.
Bees and ponds
The Ortho label says it is highly toxic to bees and warns about fish and reptile pets in ornamental ponds. Do not spray blooming plants.
Questions people ask
Is bifenthrin safe for dogs once it dries?
Labels for the bifenthrin products we checked let pets back after the spray has dried. That is the label standard. It is not the same as saying there is zero risk.
Is bifenthrin worse for cats?
NPIC documents high sensitivity in cats to permethrin, a related pyrethroid. NPIC's bifenthrin fact sheet does not say the same about bifenthrin. So we make no claim that bifenthrin is worse for cats.
Which products contain bifenthrin?
Among the labels on this site: Ortho Home Defense (0.05%) and Talstar P (7.9%). Look for bifenthrin in the active ingredient statement on any other product.
